Taking Stock

A year which promises to be filled with
goodbyes,
changes,
unexplored possibilities,
challenges,
new vistas,
and
unanticipated insights.

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied: "Go into the darkness
and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light
and safer than a known way.”

First Place

That's our state!

The reality is nothing
you'd want to make a movie
or TV show about!

No, actually I don't...

was my reply when someone said "Well, you have to give him credit; at least he told you he put 'marks' on his kid".

No, I'm NOT giving him credit... and here's why.

* His rendition of using 'discipline' on his child and spanking him on the butt for misbehaving in school didn't come close to describing the findings of loop marks on his kids back, his butt, all his extremities, his head, his feet and even his genitals.
It would have made an overseer in the Deep South wince; it was like something out of 'Roots.'

*He wasn't even supposed to be around the kid.
The 'safety plan' he and mom agreed to when the State workers came out the day before was that dad wasn't to have ANY contact with the kid until there was a complete investigation.

I also didn't give 'points' to mom, boo-hooing on the phone about how she couldn't do what the State workers told her to do and that was to bring him herself.
I get that, for a single working parent, it's hard to take time off from work... I've been there;
but we're talking about your 5 yr old who's been whooped to the point of not being able to sit down.

Funny, she was able to take off work and get to the hospital fast enough when her boyfriend told her the police were there to talk to him.

Neither one of them won the 'bonus round' with extra points but they BOTH got a card...

O God,

let something essential happen to me,
something awesome,
something real.

Speak to my condition, Lord
and change me somewhere inside
where it matters,
a change that will burn
and tremble
and heal
and explode me into tears
or laughter
or love that throbs
or screams
or keeps a terrible, cleansing silence
and dares the dangerous deeds.

Let something happen in me which is my real self, God…. O God,
let something essential and joyful happen in me now,
something like the blooming of hope and faith,
like a grateful heart,
like a surge of awareness of how precious each moment is,
that now,
not next time,
now is the occasion to take off my shoes
to see every bush afire,
to leap and whirl with neighbor,
to gulp the air as sweet wine
until I’ve drunk enough to dare to speak the tender word:
“Thank you”
“I love you”
“You’re beautiful”
“Let’s live forever beginning now”

According to government statistics,

The number of Americans killed in all the wars since 1775 is 1.7 million,

The number of Americans killed by firearms, including suicides, since 1968 is 1.38 million.

What will it take do you suppose
before we get serious about stopping the carnage?

Still got mine!
How about you?

Some words of sense in a world gone mad...

(originally found here)

People:
Before you begin your rant about how terrible everyone in Washington is,
make sure you get the facts straight.
This is NOT about the President,
who is asking Congress to pay for expenses they've already approved,
including the Affordable Care Act,
which was approved by two houses of Congress,
signed into law,
upheld by the Supreme Court,
and, when made into a central issue of the 2012 election,
was not overturned by the voters.

This is NOT about the refusal of Democrats to compromise.
Obamacare IS the compromise.
It was the Republican counterproposal to the nationalized health care plan from the Clinton administration.
That's why Mitt Romney pushed it through in Massachusetts
(yes, the economist who wrote the Massachusetts plan said Romneycare is the same as Obamacare).

It's a mandate for people to buy PRIVATE health insurance.
Nothing could be more Republican.
Many Democrats hate/d the Affordable Care Act because it didn't nationalize health care,
but they . . . compromised . . .
so 40 million more Americans,
including people with pre-existing illnesses, could get health care.
There's been no Republican counter-proposal because OBAMACARE IS THEIR PLAN.
Obama adopted it because he thought they'd support their own plan.
How crazy was that?

This is NOT about "Congress."
The Senate -- which has brought the House resolution to the floor multiple times,
and amended and approved the amended bill by majority vote --
has approved a "clean" funding resolution,
but the Speaker of the House WILL NOT ALLOW THAT RESOLUTION TO COME TO THE FLOOR OF THE HOUSE FOR A VOTE.
Were it to be voted on in the House,
there's a reasonable probability it would pass
with support of Democratic members
and a significant number of moderate Republicans."

Why won't the President and the Senate accept the Republican proposal to delay a year?
Because it's already been delayed.
The Republicans are trying to stall until after the 2014 elections,
hoping to win both House and Senate so they can overturn the law.
They also are terrified that once people sign up and get healthcare and like it,
they'll think -- as they did with Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security --
that it's a pretty good thing.
THAT, Senator Cruz, is the real message of "Green Eggs and Ham,"
which you completely misunderstood.

This IS about a small group of about 30 legislative terrorists
who would rather blow up the government
than permit legislation they don't like,
even when approved by majority vote, to be enacted.

It's also about a Speaker of the House who will not permit a bill
to come to the floor for a vote
unless the terrorists approve.

This is really about whether we believe in democracy --
 in majority rule -- or not.

You don't get to wreck the country every time you don't get your way.

If all the Border Patrol officers -- who as of this morning are working without pay --
would go home,
I wonder how long it would take the Senators from Texas to get the message?

Just sayin'

Where are the seniors?
No, not us silver haired foxes –
although it wouldn’t hurt for some of the AARP
to take those whippersnappers out behind the barn and tan their hides.

I’m referring to the metaphor that everyone always uses
 about life really only being a repetition of high school –
with the division of jocks, techno geeks, thespians, goths, preppies etc -
echoing through the ages.

I thought of that this morning
when one of the talking heads was referring to the ‘freshmen’ Senators of the Tea Party
who are responsible for the latest Washington debacle.

Really?
Who in their right minds would ever allow freshmen to take over a high school?

All I know is, it never would have happened back in Jersey.
Their asses would have already have been handed to them by upperclassmen
and then crammed into their lockers.

Maybe not the best form of conflict management
but it would sure get their attention and bring them down a peg.

It was a lovely weekend...

with much to be thankful for.

A commitment ceremony in church for a friend and his partner
who have been waiting almost two decades for the church
to recognize and bless their love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't particularly follow sports
but the Cardinals are a big deal in this town...
and I love the sense of community that gets fostered
with all the playoff hoopla.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was contacted recently by the author of a book I marked as 'read' on my Goodreads page.
I don't think I even reviewed it - although I did give it 4 stars.
It was a first person account of walking the Camino.
A Million Steps by Kurt Koonz.
I enjoyed it.
I never dreamed I'd get a personal 'Thank you' for having read the book -
from the author himself.
We communicated a few times, via email;
he even commented on my Camino blog!
Nice touch!

No matter how engrossed I get in a book,
no matter how compelling the characters are
or how much they stay with you after the last page,
I think about the persons in the book as fixed
and contained only within the pages...
it was nice to be reminded that there's an author,
there's a real person behind the words,
telling his story to the best of his ability,
sharing his truth.

I liked the reminder;
I liked the gesture.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was so beautiful this weekend.
I was going to work in the yard.
I was going to take the dogs for a long walk.
I was going to go down to the basement
and gather up more items for the church rummage sale
next weekend.
But I didn't.
I did THIS instead.
 I think I should feel guilty -
but, I don't.
As I said,
it was a lovely weekend.
I'm making it officially known to the universe.
After I retire,
after I walk 550 miles,
after I buy my scooter chair because I'm never walking another step in my life,
I intend to learn how to crochet.
Yup,
I'm going to be one of those grannies
who make ridiculously cheerful,
happy,
maybe downright impractical things -
like buntings
and yarn bombed lamps!
I'll spend my pension
on yarns and, when I die,
I'll have half a dozen unfinished projects in a canvas bag at my side.
Sounds about right!
Who wants to teach me?
All images BTW from the fabulous blog
Dear single mom who took 3 hours of my life today -
Trust me on this one.
 I know how hard it is to find someone to date -
someone with any redeeming features
other than being upright and breathing.
Throw in finding someone with a job, intellect,
a sense of humor and any morals at all
and you can almost hear strains of
"To Dream the Impossible Dream".
When your friends told you to check 'the lists',
I suspect they meant
Craig's List,
e-Harmony
or Match. com;
all dicey in my opinion
but to each her own!
They certainly didn't mean the states Sex Offenders Registry!
The fact that your last 3 boyfriends have all been on that list, however,
is neither random nor a coincidence!
You must be shopping that list with some regularity
As hard as it may be to envision life by yourself,
there ARE, in fact, worse things than you being alone.
Just ask your 2 yr old daughter.
Can you stand a few more??
'Cause you can never have too many gorgeous, perfect baby shots -
Am I right?!
Good thing I don't live closer...
or this poor child would have her own personal
paparazzi!
And just so you don't think I didn't do anything else this weekend besides
get up in the baby's face...
there was antiquing on the way home.
 No buying but it's always fun to look.
I DID pick up some ideas...
as you go about raking up fall leaves,
have an equipment malfunction and
are tempted to throw away that rake head...
DON'T!
 Loved both of these recycling ideas!
Don't you?
Is this heaven?
No, it's Iowa!
With
perfect fall weather,
great food, deep conversations
and a beautiful baby
that, I'm sure,
has Swedes everywhere
celebrating!
Pictures with practically every 'costume change'...
and one cuter than the next.
She's adorable even when crying.
Yup; it's official;
I'm smitten!
An Artists Dozen
My son is an artist – have I told you that before?
 An honest to Pete, living in a reclaimed warehouse,
semi-starving,
” painting is his happy place” artist.
He shares his vision whether anyone gets it or not;
his art isn’t ‘commercial’
will rarely match a couch
and won't be found over a mantle with matching candlesticks on either side.
 I couldn’t be more proud of him.
He is - and always has been - an original.
No ‘cookie cutter’ kids in my life!
 His willingness and courage to live on the margins
inspires me to do the same – well, MY version,
since we all have to be the artists of our own lives!
 While I drive to Iowa this morning to see the latest addition to our family,
I thought it would be fun to share some of his work,
some of the titles of his pieces
and see if you can match them up.
