Jack

I am beyond sad this night...

I feel quite broken actually.

Jack went in for a CT scan today - and it confirmed my worst fears...

He had a tumor at the base of his brain going into his spinal cord, pressing on his first two vertebrae.
To operate in an attempt to remove it would, more likely than not, have led to paralysis.

The option of radiation and chemo is only offered at the University system Vet school, half way across the state.

It also would only have slowed the growth, not eradicated it and would not have been a painless or easy process for him.

My beautiful boy never made it off the table.
His pain is over... but I'm not quite sure what Pearl and I will do now that it's just us girls!

A friend once said I have 'the gift of tears' - which is just a lovely spiritual way of saying I cry at a good steak...

I'm not sure there's enough Kleenex in the house to handle this.

I doubt it's just me who needs this reminder...

Uppity Women Unite

Being truth tellers

I can understand why he said it.
I know why he would want to believe it.

I can only hope, given his years of working in the field of abuse, he hasn’t actually convinced himself it’s true!

He was talking, for the press, about the sexual abuse of a 13 month old child; abuse that was orchestrated and captured on film by her mother and the sexual predator she met on line.

While that’s shocking for most of the public, I’m sad to say it isn’t for those of us in a pediatric ER.
Which isn’t to say that I’m not sickened and revolted by it; merely that I’ve seen it before and it’s not shocking, especially when you’ve seen worse.

The Detectives words that followed his disclosure were shocking however... “We hope that because she’s so young, she won’t remember what happened and she won’t be effected by it”.

WHAT?!
Are you kidding me?
You don’t really believe that, do you?

Everything I know, personally and professionally, tells me that’s simply not true!

We recently saw a 2 yr. old girl beaten by mothers boyfriend - broken arm, broken leg, hair pulled out, bruises all over, abdominal injuries so severe she had 3 feet of bowel removed...now slowly recovering from all her injuries.

Nearly a month has passed since her admission; she hasn’t seen her mother or the boyfriend in that whole time, has been showered with kisses and ‘loved on’ by staff, her father and her extended family, yet she still isn’t speaking and every time someone walks into her room, she freezes.

You can see her literally shrinking into herself...eyes, head and body not moving; no eye contact, breathing nearly suspended, playing ‘emotional ‘possum’; not as a game, but in an attempt to survive; trying desperately to make herself invisible and therefore not a target for whatever hand or steel toed boot is coming her way.

It's heartbreaking to witness.

When abuse is perpetrated on children at such an early age - before the full acquisition and expression of speech and nuance - it leaves a pain so profound and pervasive that it haunts for a lifetime. It will color how she perceives the world, her view of how it functions and her place in it for the rest of her life.

And the saddest part of all is that she won’t even have the words to give her betrayal a name; to fully describe how the hole in her soul feels; to define, and therefore begin to control, her reality.
Sergeant, just because you can’t name the source of your pain doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I appreciate that we can skip the salacious details but, if we’re going to tell the public about the horror we see everyday, let’s, at least, be honest about the consequences.

Shrove Tuesday

SOOOO good...
a fork wasn't enough!

But all was NOT sweetness today...

see this head?
Somethin's not right!
Jack is scheduled for a CT scan, myelogram and surgery on Thursday... for either a tumor or spinal cord problem. The specialist discovered it's definitely NOT an ear problem. She also found he has some deficits with his gait and has been 'dragging' his left front foot. (So my observation that he seemed to be 'dropping his food' made perfect sense to her!)

Keeping my fingers crossed and prayers ascending that whatever is found can be fixed...
I know the wives tale that deaths are supposed to come in threes, but I really couldn't take another loss at this point!
But I certainly don't want him in pain...

One step at a time!

I've been told

it's not normal to:

* notify the investigator for the Prosecuting Attorney about the death of your mother before notifying siblings...because you know the news will impact and complicate 'the docket' and his life far more than it will impact or inconvenience theirs.

* have to use Facebook to let your sister know your mother died - because you have no working phone number or address for her.

* get sympathy cards from the Detective Bureaus and the States Attys offices in three jurisdictions before funeral plans are finalized.

*feel more surrounded by people who care at work and church than within your immediate family.

Welcome to my world.

Friends are family you choose for yourself. ~

Mardi Gras weekend

Life is a cabaret...

well, sometimes, so is a church dining room!

You do know Episcopalians aren't teetotalers, right?

I mean REALLY NOT teetotalers!!

LOVE that all ages can enjoy the skits and have such a good time!

And mothers of three can so perfectly channel a student from a local high school!

It was a GREAT event!

But somehow, my current frame of mind is more suited to the quietness and reflectiveness of Lent. (At least there's the segue-way of 'Fat Tueday' to make the transition easier!)
I get it now;
I didn't get it then.

That life is about losing
and about doing it as gracefully as possible...

and enjoying everything in between.

Smart girl that Mia...
except for the part about choosing
that nebbish pervert loser!

Unbelievable!!

Did I miss something?
Like a trip in a time machine?

Am I REALLY listening to hearings - paid for by MY taxes - about birth control??
In 2012?

Good grief!

Truth

I came across a quote today from one of my favorite spiritual writers that had me shouting “YES” right through my tears!

If you don’t know the writer, Annie Lamott, you should; she’s fantastic - in a wonderfully authentic, brazen, irreverent, totally self aware but not self absorbed kind of way…
just the gal Jesus would want to hang out with during Happy Hour AND for long walks on a beach discussing life’s mysteries.

Seriously, you have to check her out!

Anyhoo ... when I re-read (in Grace Eventually: Thoughts on Faith)
"You can get the monkey off your back, but the circus never leaves town.",
I recognized instantly that's exactly what I’m struggling with - co-mingled, of course, with all the other ‘stuff’ connected to my moms death.

I’ve referred before to my family of origin as a ‘circus’ – an attempt to make the reality more pleasant - and more transient - than it ever was.

At the time of my mother’s death, my sister hadn’t seen her for 5 years.
My brother hadn’t seen her for 8 years.

Geographic distance was not the barrier, nor was money for travel.
I’d be hard pressed to say what the obstacle was… I won’t presume to answer for them.

But, as long as I operated as an only child - with their estrangement extending to me as well - I was insulated from having to dip into pockets of past pain.

Having to contact both of them and discuss arrangements reintroduced a whole set of feelings and realities that have blissfully been on hiatus – and, truth be told, I liked it that way.

"I thought such awful thoughts that I cannot even say them out loud because they would make Jesus want to drink gin straight out of the cat dish”(Annie Lamott).

Oh yeah… the sister knows me!

Love note to yellow, green and Trader Joe's

Another gloomy, grey day...

without a trace of sun.

So grateful my errands took me past the right corner,

where I could buy my own bouquet of light
for under $5.00!

Thank you Trader Joe's!

Memory Lane

Chocolate heart –

and one memory coming right up…

My first crush?
As clear as yesterday…

5th grade.
Billy Ding – he of the smoky, sultry eyes, with lashes longer than any girls in the class;
dark hair, slicked back in a perfect 'duck tail';
jeans (OK, they were navy blue 'chinos"-what did I know back then?),
paired with a white Tshirt –
the quintessential James Dean wanna be Rebel -

a perfect counterpoint to my ‘Villager’ sweater sets, pointy Dixie cup training bra and a 'flip’, courtesy of Dippity Do.

There was even a rumor he might be 'eye-talian'!
The closest to an ‘other’ that my suburban NJ hometown could conjure up back in the late 50's.

Fantasies abounded - until I realized, when we married, my name would be Donna Ding …
and quicker than you could say “Badda Bing, Donna Ding”, it was over.

Yes, I’m exactly that shallow!

Lord Byron

But my soul wanders; I demand it back
To meditate amongst decay, and stand
A ruin amidst ruins...

The day drags through, though storms keep out the sun;
and thus the heart will break, yet brokenly live on...

I've been surprised by the frequent moments of sadness..

death was not a surprise, not an injustice visited upon one too young;
it was a relief.

I cried so often, in so many therapists' chairs, about not having a mother;
I expected the reality of losing the one I had to be anticlimactic ...

and it was...

and it wasn't.

Do you suppose a 70+ yr old Kindle will offer the same comfort and beauty?
No, I don't think so either.

Saturday still life

Surrounded by beauty,

sun, after days of grey,

healthy food,

loving, tho' tired, companions,

and the thoughts and prayers of creative, loving, faithful people.

It is abundance.
