just one more post post election... I promise!

I’ve been reading with fascination all the opinion columns written by political wonks, ruminating about the results of the recent elections.

Authoritative voices offering up ideas about what one side did right, one side did wrong and predicting what changes need to be made in both parties before we begin this madness all over again in approx. 30 months.

And besides everyone acknowledging that somebody somewhere has to address the clusterfuckedness that is Florida, there were other observations that made a lot of sense to me.

Republicans are counting on an electorate whose vision for our country is predicated on a life style they knew while growing up; a life style that has primarily disappeared.

America is on the verge of NOT having light skinned people of European descent as a majority.
Two parent families in which the mom stays home while the father earns a living that comfortably supports them and their 2.5 children hasn’t existed for decades.
Women with fully functioning minds and uteruses haven’t been content, for more than 30 years now, with having people with penises determine what happens to their bodies. Most of us, in fact, can’t believe we’re still arguing with some Neanderthals about it.
People of both sexes take exception to others telling them who they can love and share their lives with, etc.

You can either be distraught about the reality these facts represents and continue to operate out of fear (the Republicans) or embrace the changes and see them as opportunities for ‘cross pollination’ that could ultimately strengthen our country (the Democrats)

BTW - for those who think our national past doesn't inform our current state of affairs, you might want to have a second thought.

There were an overwhelming number of pundits who said the Republicans, in order to survive, HAVE to reach out to minorities and women, especially single women.

I can't speak for people of color (although I know what my relatives of color would say to that idea) but I CAN speak as a woman who has lived alone for decades… and I can tell you there is NO group in America who has looked fear straight in the eye and stared it down like single women!

We know the stats… we have a greater chance of getting struck by lightening or  being attacked by a terrorist than finding a partner; we will probably die alone - if not alone than surrounded by 13 cats; a second marriage has less of a chance of succeeding than our first marriage; our retirement income will be less than our male counterparts since there's still no salary equity, forcing us to eat the cat food out of adjacent dishes with our pets (see reference above); we will be alone longer than males of comparable age – since not only do we live longer but men are adept at changing partners more rapidly than women - as in most widowers have remarried in about the same time frame as most widows think about going through their  deceased husbands underwear drawer!

The single women I know neither want nor need a political party that operates out of fear … that reinforces the myth that there’s not enough ‘out there’ to go around; that tells us we need to lock down our borders, our subdivisions, our homes and our hearts and be unresponsive to the human beings with whom we share this country.

That's the very instinctual response we fight against every day!

We chose hope; we chose to believe that there’s a lid for every pot; that better days (and dates) are just around the corner; that life can be full and satisfying even if doesn’t resemble the life we thought we’d have.

We’re as flexible as we are hopeful – and those are two words which have NEVER been part of the Republican lexicon.

So, sorry GOP - it just aint happenin'…  although we also believe people are capable of changing, so maybe some of the sisters will be persuaded.

There was even talk of this election producing some ‘soul searching’ among Republicans... but there’s not enough magic in the entire world to convince me that party of rich white old men has a 'soul' to begin with.

There are just some fairly tales not even I can believe in!
